Yeah, yeah. Stories are obviously somewhat true, but there's bound to be inborn errors just based on word of mouth and all. I mean some vampire stories claim they can't cross running water; that's just dumb.

Mis-translations and the writers gift of ingenuity by adding their own twists to it also is a factor, I'd think. Really? I've never heard of such a thing! [ He's laughing. ] That is a bit ludicrous.

Yeah, seriously. I mean the crosses and such is odd enough - Christian overtones much? - but the water's just plain silly.

Yes well people like having a sense of security when it comes to the unknown. So I suppose the, ah, overtones were meant to comfort people and show them that vampires weren't impervious.

Well the daylight thing makes sense already; so what's the need for throwing in a cross killing it. That's just weird; what's that even supposed to mean, anyway?

[A grunt and then a shrug there] I mean what, are vamps so atheist that the idea of God or Jesus or whatever kills them? And what about say a Chinese vampire?

It depends where the myth originates from I believe. Normal vampires were thought to be demons which possessed their victims, drank their blood and were conceived during the time of witches. Even Russian folklore depicts them as being witches that rebelled against the church. So you can see where the crosses come into play. Being undead, impure creatures of the night also made the cross a mighty foe to them.

Jiang Shi are a bit different, but similar cultural aspects are incorporated into their folklore as well. Like using rice and seeds to impede them.
