Sixty-Second Explosion

[Voice]

Oh, COME ON! What the hell. SOS-Brigade! Report in now! Whose bodies are you all in?

[Grunt, grumble, grumble...]

[Action]

["Minato" here is chilling in town. Not unusual. Unusual is that he's flopped on a bench looking visibly cheesed off. DO YOU APPROACH IT?]

These laptops are here to allow us to post on the network thing the journals have a post which is filtered completely away from the Malnos- the Organization that runs the barrier. John left 'em here for us. Naturally though 'cus it's a big secret, no one talks about them.

[A cough to clarify action and then...]

You're going to hack the protection on them.

...You're amazing, Haruki. I'll have them done as quickly as possible. [Laptop number one finishes booting, and a few keystrokes later he's got the command prompt going. He's in reading mode right now, analyzing the specs of the OS they're running on. Once again, not entirely normal by his time's standards, but workable. Principles are always the same, and he just needs to alter his code appropriately. Once he's satisfied with his analysis, he starts testing a few pieces of code he has burnt into his memory, just to see what works and what doesn't.]

[Going by the mod statements The main purpose of these computers here is to run the program which lets you post on [livejournal.com profile] lucetilocked and see the journal posts on the network in a way ultimately similar to how we might on Lj. The thing is, the computer by default is locked to only run that program, with a code hiding the desktop and all that under it. The code locking the thing is supposed to be ridiculously complex, so it's not all that dissimilar to how the COMP functions were locked.

Under that, the OS is unique as you said but in practice the browser isn't all that unlike Windows XP or Vista, and the only programs on it are basic ones like notepad or word or paint or whatever. It also has a wireless signal and can receive other wireless signals (like KAITO got into it) but obviously you can't see them because right now it's locked to merely the journal program.

I am aware this is long and convoluted but I'm following the intel I got off the mods.

Haruki, for his part, is going to lean against the wall there and grunt]

Are we talking a few minutes thing, or a few hours?

[He hesitates before answering Haruki, staring at the readout of code on the screen. The surface protections are fairly easy, but time-consuming. If they're making the protection harder as they go along (which seems appropriately dramatic), this won't be a quick job at all. Not by any means impossible, but he's not going to make Haruki wait here with him.]

Probably a few hours at the least. I'll only know what's on each layer of protection once I get through the one before it. I'll let you know over the journals once I'm done?

[Dramatic, but he expected that, so he nods]

Right. Just don't take these things out of this room.

[And with that, he's going to MANLY PAT Atsuro on the shoulder before shrugging out of the room now that they have an understanding]

[Oh boy manly displays of mutual trust or something like that. DOOT DOOT DOO A BILLION (five or six (if that's cool I dunno how long this stuff takes)) HOURS LATER, he's done.]

Haruki! I'm finished.

[And by now, he's making dinner back home feel free to notice the apron. He pauses there before rummaging to find the journal and then talks into it while he stirs this pasta]

Hah. Excellent!

Nice apron, I think mine's the same one. There's... not much to see. On the surface, anyway. It just seems like a normal OS. Nothing worth protecting with code like that, which means that has to be hidden deeper somewhere. Do you want me to do some digging?

[Voice]

[identity profile] god-is-a-dude.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Even a normal computer's a break-through for here, right? You can try to dig deeper on your own time, but for now - what kinda programs it got on it?

Basic stuff. Really basic. Paint, notepad, system tools... not much else.
